The undisputed Baltic metropolis and home to over 1 million people, Riga is a multicultural gem and the capital has enjoyed a boom-town feel since Latvia regained independence in 1991. The outward signs of prosperity in Riga can be seen especially in the vibrant nightlife, with many new bars, nightclubs, and excellent restaurants to be found in Riga's Old Quarter. Gambling is big in Riga, and a number of good casinos have opened in recent years, and there is a growing tendency towards live music in bars and casinos, which is proving very successful.
